Fluoroquinolones May Cause Kidney Damage

An article published by Reuters details a new study showing that men aged 40-85 taking fluoroquinolones are twice as likely to develop kidney problems than men not taking them. The study also showed that this highly-effective family of antibiotics can increase the likelihood of kidney damage fivefold when paired with ACE inhibitors. Researchers examined the records from 1,292 men admitted to hospitals with acute kidney injuries and 12,651 similar men hospitalized who did not have that diagnosis, and then compared who had taken fluoroquinolones. They found that eight percent of the kidney patients were on the drug, compared to only four percent of the other cohort.
