First Sleeping Pill Of Its Kind Approved By FDA

Merck & Co. received FDA approval for a new type of sleeping pill, according to an article published by Bloomberg News. Suvorexant, the chemical being marketed under the name Belsomra, turns off wakefulness, in contrast to other popular sleep aids such as Ambien, which calm the brain. It works by altering the action of orexins, which promote wakefulness in the sleep-wake cycle. Belsomra is the first orexin receptor antagonist to be approved by the FDA for sleep issues, and due to agency concerns of next-day drowsiness and lack of focus, dosage has been cut from 30 and 40 milligrams to under 15 milligrams.
