First Gene Therapy Approved in the Western Hemisphere

Reuters reports the approval of the first gene therapy drug in the Western hemisphere. The European Commission approved the new drug, Glybera, “which treats the genetic disorder lipoprotein lipase deficiency.” The treatment will cost “around 1.2 million euros ($1.6 million) per patient, a new record for pricey modern medicines.”
