FDA Panel Approves Easing Restrictions on Avandia

An article published by The Associated Press reports that a Food and Drug Administration advisory panel recommends removal of some of the safety limits on diabetes medication Avandia. This advisory comes in the wake of new analysis which suggests “that the drug may not increase the risk of heart attack as much as previously thought.” The group was split in its decision: Of the 26 panelists, 13 voted to decrease the restrictions, 7 voted to remove them entirely, 5 voted to maintain the current rules, and 1 voted to pull the medication completely.
