FDA Issues Warning Against Improper Use of Laxatives

The Huffington Post reports that the FDA has issued a warning against the improper use of oral and rectal sodium phosphate laxatives. According to the report, 54 cases of serious side-effects, including 13 deaths, have been associated with the laxatives. Currently, “labels for these laxatives carry warnings that people with kidney disease, dehydration or heart problems should talk to a health care professional before use of the product.” The reported cases have been associated with use of the medication in the aforementioned at-risk patients as well as with overdose of the product. The FDA states that the product is safe as long as used in otherwise healthy adults and in the appropriate doses.
