FDA Admonishes Use of Placental Cell Products

ABC News reports that the FDA has issued an official letter to the company MiMedx for the creation and distribution of injections containing human placenta. The placental cells are thought to contain “healing properties,” although it is difficult to isolate one specific component containing the properties. The FDA’s letter claims that the “company violated federal law by failing to get the proper license or investigational new drug application prior to marketing its ground up placenta products.” MiMedx responded by saying that, “Since the placenta product is made from human tissue,” “testing is unnecessary because placental cells already work in the human body.” The injections could be extremely harmful because they could spread disease from one human to another.
