European Regulators Report Diabetes Drugs are Not Harmful

An article in The New York Times reports on an announcement by European regulators that, “there is little evidence that widely used drugs to treat Type 2 diabetes could cause pancreatic inflammation or pancreatic cancer.” The announcement came after a study was published which European regulators believe is unreliable. It found that people who had used Januvia or Byetta, as treatments for their diabetes had “more signs of inflammation and precancerous cellular changes than the organs from diabetics who had not taken those drugs or those from nondiabetics.” European regulators claim that these findings are inconclusive, as patients who suffered from inflammation were older and had diabetes for a longer amount of time.
