Engineering the World’s First Lab-Grown Penis

For men who suffer from congenital disorders or traumatic injuries that affect the penis, help may soon arrive in the form of a lab-grown member, an article published by CBS News reports. Researchers at the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine say that organs could be tested in people as early as 2019, if approved by the FDA. In 2008, the institute successfully created penises for rabbits, but receiving approval for testing on humans would require far more quality assurance. The initial process proposed begins with growing cells from a patient’s existing genitals in the lab, followed by a penis donation from a deceased man and the addition of smooth muscle and endothelial cells.
