Drug to Treat Blood Clots Approved by the FDA

The FDA has approved Cangrelor, an intravenous drug that will be used to prevent blood clots in patients who receive an angioplasty, according to a report from Reuters. Cangrelor was developed by The Medicine Co. and has taken a decade to earn approval from the FDA. However, the FDA said that in a trial that compared Cangrelor to Plavix, Cangrelor was shown to significantly reduce the occurrence of heart attacks and also reduced the need for further stent procedures. Cangrelor could hit the markets as early as July and The Medicine Co. is hopeful that it can help reduce heart disease which is currently the leading cause of death in US.
