Rashmi Roy, MD, FACS, points out that thyroid cancer is being diagnosed in more women than ever before. This is mainly due to the increased scrutiny physicians practice in their physical exams and imaging of a patient’s neck. Signs of a suspicious ultrasound include micro-calcifications and/or nodules on the thyroid gland of one centimeter or greater. If either of these signs are found, a biopsy of the nodule(s) would be performed.

In the event that the biopsy returned a result of “suspicious,” the patient would be given the option of having a partial resection of the thyroid gland – known as a lobectomy. If the returned result was “malignant,” the patient would be recommended for a thyroidectomy, or a complete removal of the thyroid gland.
