Diabetes Epidemic Hits Hard in China

Bloomberg News reports that a study in JAMA has found that Chinese rates of obesity are now amongst the highest in the world. The study investigated the prevalence of diabetes and glycemic control in 98,658 Chinese adults. They found that the prevalence of diabetes amongst Chinese adults was about 11.6% compared to 11.3% in American individuals. Additionally, the study found that the rate of undiagnosed diabetes was about 8.1%. These rates are alarming and suggest that Chinese people are developing diabetes at a lower body mass index than American individuals. Reuters states that, “China’s government is trying to fight the scourge by expanding basic medical coverage, buying more medicines in bulk to lower costs, and conducting a corruption probe of international drug makers.”
