DEA To Allow Return of Prescription Drugs in Effort to Alleviate Rising Abuse

According to a New York Times article, the Drug Enforcement Administration will soon allow consumers to return unused prescription painkillers to pharmacies. The new policy will include drugs such as opioid painkillers, stimulants, and depressants. A 2014 study conducted by the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids revealed that more than 70 percent of teenagers said they would have no trouble getting prescription drugs from their parents’ medicine cabinets. About 3.9 billion prescriptions were filled at pharmacies in 2013, and until now, options to dispose of controlled substances were highly limited or dangerous.
