Cytotoxic Therapies Help Eliminate Persistent HIV

Antiretroviral therapy (ART) has proven effective in reducing HIV plasma levels. However “little is known about the effects of ART outside of the peripheral blood regarding persistent virus production in tissue reservoirs.” A new study in PLoS Pathogens investigated the efficacy of HIV-specific immunotoxin for eliminating HIV infected cells within the organs of mice undergoing ART. The results show that “compared to ART alone, this agent profoundly depleted productively infected cells systemically.”
