Company Warns of Ineffectiveness of Emergency Contraception in Obese Women

NBC News reports that the European manufacturer, HRA Pharma, will begin cautioning women of the ineffectiveness of their emergency contraception pill, Norlevo, in obese women. According to the company the pill is “ineffective” in women over 176 pounds and “doesn’t work as well” in women over 165 pounds. “Norlevo contains a synthetic hormone known as levonorgestrel,” which “when taken within 72 hours after sex, delays or prevents ovulation or block fertilization of an egg.” The FDA is now investigating whether similar drugs in the United States, such as Plan B One-Step, require similar labeling changes.
