Children With Type 1 Diabetes Have Greater Risk for Psychiatric Issues

According to Reuters, a study published in Diabetes Care has found that children with type 1 diabetes are at higher risk for developing a psychiatric disorder or attempting suicide. After analyzing more than 17,000 diabetic children born between 1973 and 2009, researchers discovered that approximately eight percent of kids with type 1 diabetes were also diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder. Additionally, the likelihood of being diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder by age 18 was double for these patients, and they were also 1.7 times more likely to attempt suicide. The implication is that these psychological disorders may result from the physiological effects of coping with diabetes, and not from a genetic risk factor.
