Child ‘Stuck’ in Hospital v. Parents Medical Dispute

The Boston Globe reports on the case of a young girl caught in the middle of a “medical dispute” between her parents and Boston Children’s Hospital. Justina was diagnosed with mitochondrial disease at Tufts University a few years ago but with worsening symptoms, Tufts sent her to Boston Children’s, where her physician had transferred. Boston Children’s, however, immediately altered her treatment and stated that Justina’s symptoms were “more psychiatric than physical,” a claim which her parents rejected. Now, the hospital has involved the state’s child protective services for “medical child abuse.” “The Department of Children and Families…is supposed to be a neutral referee assessing the charges against the parents,” but given the power of Boston Children’s they are “often difficult to challenge.”
