Challenging the Policy Banning Blood Donations By Gay Men

Medical and legal experts are challenging the 30-year policy preventing gay and bisexual men from donating blood, says an article published by CBS News. Along with two others, Glenn Cohen J.D., director of Harvard Law School’s Petrie-Flom Center, submitted an article published in JAMA urging the FDA to reconsider this policy under the claim that new technologies and advances in healthcare have rendered the lifelong-ban irrelevant. Other countries, such as the United Kingdom and Canada have made changes to similar laws, neither of which has reported an increase in HIV-positive donations. FDA spokeswoman Jennifer Rodriguez said the agency would consider making changes to the lifelong ban, following the conclusions of new research.
