Census Bureau Reports: ‘Graying of America’ is Speeding

The New York Times reports that the “graying of America” is hastening with declining fertility and mortality rates. According to a Census Bureau report released Tuesday, “By 2050, 83.7 million Americans will be 65 or older, compared with 43.1 million in 2012.” Although international migration of people between the ages of 18 to 64 has helped “keep the nation younger,” increasing lifespan due to factors such as people quitting smoking and better healthcare will continue to raise the number of elderly people in our nation. “The report said the United States would be among a number of nations with a large share of their populations older than 65.”
