CDC Discovers Three Deaths Due to Lyme Disease

Three people in the past year unexpectedly died from a heart condition associated with Lyme diseaseThe Boston Globe reports. The findings were based on a study conducted by the CDC, prompted by the discovery of abnormal heart tissue inflammation in a man found dead in a car accident, suggesting that death due to Lyme disease is more prevalent than previously thought. “About 1 percent of Lyme patients are believed to have severe heart inflammation, known as carditis, which is treatable with appropriate antibiotics and, in rare cases, a pacemaker.” Experts are urging people, especially those in the Northeast, to receive the Lyme disease vaccine and to see a physician if they experience chest pain.
