Causes & Symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis

Chronic Diseases

Eric Sasso, MD, Vice President, Medical and Scientific Affairs, Crescendo Bioscience, describes the causes and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). RA is caused when the body’s immune system attacks tissues in the joints, leading to inflammation, pain, and the eventual destruction of the joint. While the cause of RA is not definitely known, several factors are thought to increase a person’s risk for the autoimmune disease such as: family history, cigarette smoking and certain types of antibodies.
