Can Too Much Exercise Be Bad?

An article in The New York Times’ Well blog reports that too much exercise may actually have negative health outcomes. A study in European Heart Journal followed 52,755 long distance runners and found that those who completed more races and with shorter times were more likely to develop arrhythmias and bradyarrhythmias. Furthermore, another study published in The Journal of the American College of Cardiology found that in an animal model, “Chronic endurance exercise increased atrial fibrillation susceptibility in rats, with autonomic changes, atrial dilation, and fibrosis identified as potential mechanistic contributors.” However, scientists still suggests that moderate normal exercise still has beneficial health outcomes.
