Being Cynical May Put You At Higher Risk for Dementia

Previous research has shown that cynicism may impact physical health and now new research shows that early and persistent cynicism may put an individual at higher risk for dementiaCBS News reports. Subjects were asked to fill out questionnaires gaging their level of cynicism and then underwent 2 tests for dementia 8 years apart. Looking at the 46 subjects who developed dementia in the 8 year period, researchers found that “after adjusting for factors such high blood pressure and cholesterol, the researchers found people with high levels of cynicism were three times more likely to develop dementia than those with low levels of cynicism.” Experts say the research may help diagnose dementia at its earliest stages.
