Baby Purportedly ‘Cured’ of HIV Tests Positive

A Mississippi child once thought to have been cured of HIV has now tested positive for the virus, a New York Times article says. A report from March 2013 reported that the child was cured after undergoing aggressive treatment, in the hopes of reversing the effects of the condition in infants and newly infected adults. A newfound hope sparked by the case prompted a clinical trial in 450 babies worldwide, though the planned 48-week study has not yet begun after receiving word of the Mississippi baby’s recent emergence of the virus’ symptoms.
