Artificial Pancreas May Offer Solution for Type 1 Diabetes Patients

For patients with Type 1 diabetes, a portable pancreas in the form of a modified iPhone may offer the solution to regulating blood sugar levels, an article published in The New York Times reports. About one-third of Type 1 diabetes patients use insulin pumps to monitor and regulate blood sugar, but these pumps fail to automatically adjust to the patient’s specific insulin needs, and are incapable of apportioning glucagon. The new artificial pancreas system is able to monitor and dispense both insulin and glucagon, through a sensor implanted under the patient’s skin.
