Are Probiotics the Solution to Preventing Peanut Allergies?

In a recent animal study published in PNAS, probiotics showed to help prevent or treat peanut allergies, an article published by CBS News reports. Food allergies affect about 15 million people in the U.S., and with allergy rates rising, it is estimated that about two children in every classroom have a potentially life-threatening allergic response to food. In the study, scientists noticed that certain non-toxic types of the bacteria Clostridia reduced intestinal permeability to to food allergens, resulting in a decrease in allergens in the bloodstream, and fewer allergic reactions.
