An Afternoon Siesta May Help Boost the Immune System

According to Reuters, a study published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism suggests that short naps may help offset the effects of sleep deprivation. Sleep deprivation can affect brain function, metabolism, hormones and the immune system, and this is the first study to examine whether napping helps stress levels or the immune system. The authors found that lack of sleep lowered interleukin-6, an immune regulating molecule, but remained normal when subjects were permitted a 30 minute nap. However, keep in mind, this is a nap of choice to refresh one’s self, while a nap out of necessity due to exhaustion may not yield the same results.
