Tom: In addition to the three steps needed
for every antibiotic prescription,
three more steps are needed when
prescribing for urinary tract infections.
First, make sure culture results represent
true infection and not just colonization.
Do this by assessing the patients
for signs and symptoms of UTI and making sure
a urinalysis is obtained with every urine culture.
Second, treat for the recommended length of time
and make sure planned post-discharge treatment
takes into account the antibiotics
were given while the patient was in the hospital.
And third, reduce the risk of infection
by removing catheters as soon
as they're no longer absolutely necessary.
