This July Fourth, celebrate your freedom from colorectal cancer!!

Ensure that you and your patients adhere to the new screening guidelines.

According to the National Cancer Institute, there will be 106,100 new cases of colon cancer and 40,870 new cases of rectal cancer in 2009, resulting in 49,920 combined deaths. Click here for more information.

The American Cancer Society recommends that men and women at average risk for colorectal cancer undergo a screening test that finds polyps and cancer every 5 years, beginning at age 50. Patients with certain risk factors (such as a personal history of IBD or a family history of colorectal cancer) should be screened earlier and more often. Click here to review the full ACS guidelines.

Evidence surrounding colorectal cancer screening is rated and reviewed in an NCI PDQ here (updated 4/30/2009).

The American Gastroenterological Association also provides an interpretation of the new screening guidelines, written by Lisa Boardman, MD of the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. Click here.
